Updating server without being there

Is it possible to have a server run at your friends house and update/add things to the server without having to wait for him to go online and put it in? Can you use that smv program thingy to make his files update once i update them, if so, how do you set this up?

normally i use a VNC connection for stuff like this. only thing is, your friend will have to trust you quite a bit, because it gives you access to his PC like you were sitting at it.

of course he could also setup an FTP server on his PC. with the server files in the FTP folder, he could give you access to upload/change them that way and it would be more secure on his end. doing it this way, though, you'd have to find another way to remote restart the server, since you can't through the FTP. i believe there is a web-starter somewhere in the web tools section of the forum, but i could be mistaken.
