As for an animation tutorial.. ill need to look into how SMD is formulated before i consider trying to get one in, cos i need to see how it treats the bones and ect, also how frames and handled and similar. technically it shouldn't be of any difficulty with existing models already, depending on how you configured the exports it should technically already be able to assembled a rigged model. but in any case you should be able to animate zmd and create an animation even without a zms, well this is in theory at least, as i said it depends on the file format quite a lot.

About SMD - It treats the bones exactly how it is in ZMD/ZMO/ZMS. Every vertex could be assigned to range of 1 to n bones (limited in my exporter to 4 - Rose limitation, and it's enough) with bone ids and bone weights.
BTW when exporting to ZMS the converter saves separate ZMS file per material - as in Rose, each ZMS has mostly just 1 texture file.
