let's try something completely off topic

So I was just browsing around and found this site all about logical paradoxes
http://www.logicalparadoxes.info

I worked my way through all the examples just for giggles and I concluded that not one of them is actually a logical paradox at all.
In each case except one, the apparent paradox is created by the incorrect application of premises.
In the other one there simply isn't a paradox at all. It just describes a law of mathematics and make it look like it is paradoxical.

Take a look through them all and see if you concur. If not then let's have a chat about philosophy and stuff just for giggles.

Remember these things.
  • The purpose of a logical examination of a series premises is designed to test whether those premises are actually valid. Don't assume that the premises given are correct.
  • There may be a hidden premise somewhere in the text which is in fact NOT true.
  • Knowledge and beliefs are held tentatively. i.e. If they are shown to be false then we must be ready to discard them. There is no such thing as TRUTH.
Remember these three things and see how you get on with debunking these claimed Paradoxes :D
Or maybe you agree with them?

Well, I only went through the first two, but it's so bad that I don't want to read on :)

It's a bit like those logics :

"All cats are mortal, Socrat is mortal, so Socrat is a cat."

or

In Gruyere you have some holes and the saying goes like that :

"The more cheese there is, the more holes there are. But, the more holes the less cheese. So the more cheese the less cheese."

"All cats are mortal, Socrat is mortal, so Socrat is a cat."

Well that's just faulty logic.
The conclusion simply doesn't follow from the premise.

And that is really the issue with all of the examples. No matter how much they wrap the things up in mumbo jumbo, not one of them is a true paradox.

Take the old one about God and the rock.

It goes like this.

Premises:
God is ALL POWERFUL (that's the only premise in this case)

So if he is Omnipotent as the claim goes then he MUST be able to do ANYTHING.
Therefore he MUST be able to create a rock so heavy that he cannot lift it.
BUT it he can't lift it then there is something he is unable to do.
If he CAN lift it then he wasn't able to make it too heavy for him to lift.... and so on. It's a true paradox if the premise is actually valid.

Conclusion:
The premise is NOT valid.
The claim of omnipotence is patently impossible for any being in our logically bound universe.

That's how we test premises ;)

Exactly, it's the same as trying to prove something by recurrence : if you don't have a valid starting point, nothing else is exact.

I'd say even more : it's the basis of maths. You can apply a theorem only if the premises are correct, otherwise your whole demonstration is wrong.
