The most common reason I have seen for this kind of thing in the osprose server is that the server is being improperly compiled in such a way that certain header files are not being loaded properly. this results in some values being offset by one or more bytes throughout certain parts of the program.
I have had this happen myself a couple of times.
It crashes immediately when you select a character.
It almost invariably happens after modifying a header and then just compiling rather than rebuilding.
The fix is normally to delete the binary then rebuild the entire server.
