there is quite a lot of people still using xp tbh, yes win 7 is spreading fast, but its mainly through more hardcore gamers or devs, your domestic person who just plays once in a while isnt gonna most likely update unless he buys a new computer, not to mention as you said the latest cards support dx10 and 11 and ect, but the machine im running atm can only have an agp card, and there is only like 1 or 2 cards on the market with agp for dx10 and they cost way more than i am willing to pay, i know i need a new pc, but needing to support my self i cant really afford it now, not that im complaining or anything but there is bound to be other people with a situation like mine, cos if i buy a new pc im gonna buy a brand new one and that needs money. So unless the engine can go up and down between the dx versions and not be stuck up to 10 or 11 i wouldn't take that step till winxp becomes officially outdated. This is the same reasoning why only like 1 or 2 games currently in the market support only dx10+

not really there are showing up more games that are dx10+
indeed I was thinking about dx choise for the player itself.
But I guess this will be again a pain in the ass, because you have look for an engine or you have to build the client 2 or 3 times in 1 project. because of the dx version (I think that was problem correct me if I'm wrong)

i don't think that would be the case, i might be wrong of course, i cant say i have experience in this but i would imagine you could do a thing where if the dx version isn't high enough the game engine simply disables all the things it could not render or replaces them with something else, i think that would be possible to make all in one build

that's the same thing I said.
But I would do it apart from each other. and just let the game check the dx version at the start.
and than loads the right dx version that the pc has.
But that will make to engine next to each other and that will make us give loads of extra work.
since we literally have to build the engine 2 times :P

if the engine is flexible this would only apply to various shaders and similar, so its not really 2 times the work, the core of the engine would remain the same because that would be rendering maps, objects and all that stuff which would take up the most stuff.

true.
But that will need an pc with dx9 and dx10 or dx11
Since I don't have XP anymore on NON of my PCs at home it will be pain.
Same goes for my buddy, we both work with 7.
So we need somebody or we need to install or virtual windows XP
