Release

A project which includes source code for an old and somewhat unique evo client and an OsRose server which comprises of an old rev81 combined with KTRose pre-evo. Many new features in both client and server

I replaced the built znzin.dll with the one in the old donor client and at least now it gets past the splash but then crashes when the ClientLog reports that initialization is complete after initializing fonts. I'll keep poking at it. As before, I really want to get this thing working.

so far i have never found a single actual error in znzin

Many times the apparent error will look like it's coming from there but can eventually be backtracked to a bad value coming from trose and 90% of the time that will resolve to a packet issue that originates in the server

Every single time I thought it was znzin it turned out not to be.
My conclusion is that znzin is pretty solid but doesn't have a lot of protection against bad data tying into it

are you running it with the osrose based server that was posted in my project?
or with the original SHO server that is in the "unknown source" files from ragezone

if you are running the osrose version then I suggest that you look intensively at packets. There are many that are just plain wrong
Compare the structures with receiving structs in the client.
You can trace them pretty easy by searching on the packet id

I built the server from source from the files at the top of this thread.

right, so you have an osrose style server still at that point.

I will just tell you that we had to rebuild most of the packet structures since then. So many of them don't match the client properly.
The latest state of this server is almost unrecognizable now

Not quite sure where to go from here then. There's so much info scattered around on this forum and so much of it is outdated, doesn't work, or contains links to files long since dead. :( It's quite overwhelming, really. That's why I was initially drawn to the 137 project, because it seemed like it was trying to reign in the chaos and make something somewhat standardized without a whole lot of hooplah.

That's exactly right.
Unfortunately the osrose server part of the project is still subject to a lot of the common problems with other osrose servers.
You are on the right track. You just have to learn your way around packets, how to initialize and send them. How to match up the server side data with the client receivers and so on.

See, I don't particularly know the difference between the different versions. When I originally found ROSE, it was the "official" iROSE, and then eROSE, where I was a closed beta tester. After that, when eROSE went down, naROSE was the thing, and now I guess that's gone too, and the only other ROSE I know that is still going strong is AruaROSE, as AlegaROSE is also gone now. Game lists show a few other servers running but they pale in comparison to AruaROSE in terms of userbase.

I'm not a low-level kind of dev. I know next to nothing about tracing packets or syncing communications protocols. However, let me loose with developing finite state machines or artificial intelligence and I'm all in. That's probably why I've had so little luck with getting the initial system set up but once the basics are in working order, I can go to town expanding on what's already there. That's why I'm really looking for a working system that just builds and doesn't give me any grief; fixing issues I didn't cause is often beyond my capabilities but fixing my own issues is always a breeze.
